Microsoft MDS Reviews and Pricing

Every enterprise needs to deal with huge volume of data. And as they grow in size, the volume and complexity of data grows further. Therefore, data management throughout the various applications is one of the biggest considerations for any enterprise. All the systems within an organization should be integrated so that there’s no issue of data inconsistency, data inaccuracy and data fragmentation. Also the system should be such that it can adjust itself according to the changing business requirements.

MDS Reviews

Microsoft Master Data Services (MDS) is a platform that supports Master Data Management (MDM). MDS is a more refined alternative to the centralized database system. It has helped organizations to manage data flow in a more efficient manner and also prevents data inconsistency. Master Data Management is a process of accumulating the organization’s data from various sources, then applying standard business processes and rules and building a uniform data view. After this the data is finally distributed to the various systems within the organization.

Master Data Services (MDS)

Microsoft Master Data Services is a product for developing Master Data Management solutions. It has been built on the top of SQL Server database technology for back end processing. MDS platform uses Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and provides service-oriented architecture endpoints. Better to implement a hub architecture using MDS which will help you create a centralized and synchronized data sources to reduce data redundancies across systems.

Configuration Manager

The starting point for configuring Master Data Services is the Configuration Manager. It is used for creating and configuring the MDM database. There are many stored procedures, database tables and functions in the database which collectively support back-end processing. Create a web application known as Master Data Manager which will associate the database and web application together, thereby creating an MDM solution.

Advantages

  • Easy and simple to use
  • Excel interface
  • Soft delete support
  • Sophistication of business rules
  • Hierarchy management and Security integration with AD
  • Fine grained security
  • Easy to build (and extendable) business rules
  • Automatic Notification and Versioning
  • Integrated boolean business rules
  • Change detection and Integrated workflow
  • Staging and Publication support
  • Can propagate from one repository to another
  • Can share reference data across models
  • Integrates as a web part, is quite flexible
  • Includes batch staging process as well as Excel data loading
  • Unused area of hierarchies easily identifies the members not assigned

Shortcomings

  • Business rules can be applied to the saved data only so it can’t prevent the bad data from getting entered. They should have the ability to prevent data changes and not just validate the saved changes.
  • The custom attributes are not supported by the hierarchy integration views.
  • Clunky and awkward explorer GUI.
  • There should be more frequent enhancements in the tool. Like since 2016 there was no enhancement except that Silverlight was replaced in the 2019 version.
  • Should have the ability to remove menu options that are irrelevant to data stewards such as Entity Dependencies, Collections or Change sets.
  • Should be able to default the user group’s first screen such as defaulting to a specific hierarchy display.
  • Should have the ability to resolve a bug in the domain based validation business rule feature.
  • Hierarchy names should allow more than 30 characters.
  • Should allow renaming the code and name attributes within the publication views which it only allows in the UI.
  • All attributes from all the respective levels should be included in the derived hierarchy views.
  • The CODE attribute datatypeshould be allowed to set as numeric rather than forced datatype of string.
  • Should support setting view datatypes to varchar rather than forcing nvarchar so that the subsequent extracts do not have to do datatype conversion ifunicodeis not being used in the target database.
  • Onlysupports model-level versioning so lacks granularity.
  • Data is not supported by the deployment migration GUI tool. It only supports meta-data which makes the GUI export tool fairly useless.
  • Business rules requiring manual maintenance are not supported by the deployment migration tools when using multiple environments.
  • Excel plug-in should support hierarchies.
  • Should support email notification to more than one email group/user.
  • Non-intuitive and overly complicated staging process.
  • Can’t integrate seamlessly with data quality products.
